Gregg Borek named as interim President of JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC

Gregg Borek

With the passing of Jay Kumler in February 2025, long-term Vice President Gregg Borek has assumed the role of interim President of JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC.

Gregg Borek has served as Vice President of Microoptics for JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC and General Manager of the Huntsville, Alabama facility for over 15 years. Prior to Jenoptik, Gregg was the Director of Engineering for MEMS Optical for 13 years. The company was later acquired by Jenoptik in 2006 and Gregg assumed the role of President and CEO of this company for four years.

Gregg Borek earned a B.E. in Engineering Physics with a laser and optics focus from Stevens Institute of Technology. With over 30 years of experience in optics and photonics, he has and continues to be an integral member of the JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC management board.

“Though we will continue to greatly miss Jay Kumler as photonics mentor and leader, we are happy that Gregg has accepted this new role that comes with great legacy. We are confident that Gregg will remain a skilled and passionate driving force for our business and strategic development in the United States,” said Dr. Ralf Kuschnereit, Member of the Executive Board of JENOPTIK AG.

Jenoptik, a globally operating photonics group, has had a long track record with its optics and imaging business in the United States. To expand its position in the US market, Jenoptik had acquired Liebmann Optical Company, a specialist in high-quality endoscopy optics, in 1999. This was followed in 2002 by the acquisition of Florida-based Coastal Optical Systems, which was originally founded by Jay Kumler and which added comprehensive development and production capacities, including lenses for inspection, projection, and professional television cameras. In 2006, the purchase of MEMS Optical expanded the company’s expertise in micro-optics. All three US companies were merged into one Jenoptik company at the beginning of 2010 to leverage joint strengths and allow for the delivery of services ranging from design and manufacture of prototype optical assemblies to high-volume component manufacturing.
