Intelligent energy systems for military platforms: Customized and efficient

Our energy systems will meet the exacting requirements of your mission. The systems provide a powerful, reliable energy supply and also lower fuel consumption.

Jenoptik Intelligent energy systems for military platforms: Customized and efficient

Jenoptik plans, develops and builds electrical energy systems for a wide range of applications in civilian and military vehicles, mobile platforms and stationary systems. These systems secure the supply of power, either independently or in combination with the main engine. Even if the engine or main unit is switched off, electrical systems such as the on-board electronics, sensor systems, ventilation and air conditioning continue to function to ensure the overall system remains available and ready for operation. At the same time, factors such as fuel consumption, heat generation and engine noise are all reduced to a minimum. The additional installation of an energy accumulator increases the range of your vehicle, providing the potential to extend your mission.

The increasing need to protect troops is just one of the factors driving up the energy requirements of military platforms. All energy systems supply the platform with electricity in exactly the form in which it is required. Power, capacity, voltage, current and frequency are all optimally tuned to the particular consumers in question, as well as innovative high-voltage consumers. To achieve this, Jenoptik offers products of the latest technological standard that have already proven successful in both national and international applications. When used in the particular vehicle in question, our subsystems, such as generator sets, alternators, power electronics or electrical components, are optimally tuned to one another and enable the energy for the platform to be managed in an intelligent and extremely efficient manner. Jenoptik has decades of experience in all of these fields.

We offer both customized complete systems/system solutions and standardized subsystems and components. The latter are designed to be flexible to enable us to adapt them in line with your requirements with very little effort. In this way, you can modernize your fleet at lower cost and enhance the level of performance and availability offered by your vehicles. All newly developed systems are subjected to a rigorous process of testing and optimization in a "hardware-in-the-loop" (HiL) simulation, in which we replicate the real-world environment. By taking this approach, you obtain an individual energy system that exactly meets your requirements within the shortest of time frames.

We are your expert and reliable point of contact throughout the entire product life cycle. As part of our obsolescence management and integrated logistics support, we will supply you with the necessary spare parts and regular maintenance over a period spanning decades. In this way, our customer support ensures your systems remain available over the entire product life cycle.

Jenoptik Intelligent energy systems hybrid technology

Configuration Levels of an Intelligent Energy System:

  • Basic Level: The alternator and converter generate energy and make it available in a stabilized high-voltage bus. This significantly increases the level of electrical power available in the vehicle.
  • First Level: The 28-V on-board electrical system is connected to the high-voltage bus via abidirectional DC/DC converter. This enables the alternator to be used as a starter and to support the conventional starter as a redundant system, in addition to supplying the 28-V on-board system. Taking this approach allows you to save on the conventional 28-V alternator.
  • Second Level: A grid-forming inverter in the form of a DC/AC converter makes it possible to supply consumers outside the vehicle with power by means of a 230/400-V, 50-Hz or 115/200-V, 60-Hz three-phase voltage grid. With this set-up, the vehicle can be used as a mobile auxiliary power unit (APU).
  • Third Level: By implementing a hybrid control unit, full hybrid functionality can be achieved in the vehicle — including the start-stop function and intelligent APU mode.
  • Fourth Level: To ensure that the full range of hybrid functions can be used in a vehicle, a further DC/DC converter is added. This additional converter makes it possible to integrate high-voltage batteries into the system. As a result, all consumers on the high-voltage bus can be operated without running the main engine. Fuel consumption is also lowered through recuperation when braking and the driving dynamics increased via an additional boost mechanism.

Energy systems equipped with hybrid technology

Fuel-saving yet high-performance drive technology is becoming increasingly important in military land vehicles. With this in mind, Jenoptik offers energy systems that enable vehicles to take on hybrid functionality. These systems reliably supply the on-board system and drives with power and increase the efficiency, lifespan and capacity of the system as a whole. The power supply is configured and integrated to meet your specific requirements.

Drive and power supply with varying levels of hybrid configuration:

  • Conventional drive:
A mechanical drive shaft runs directly from the combustion engine to the wheel. In normal circumstances, a generator or 28-V alternator supplies the on-board system with power. No further electrical machines are integrated within the drive system. The disadvantage of only using the main engine is the high rate of fuel consumption as well as the resulting exhaust gas, heat and noise emissions.

  • Additional electric drive:
In addition to the conventional drive, an alternator with enhanced power performance is integrated into the power train. This alternator supplies components such as auxiliary consumers that require a significant amount of electrical power. The combustion engine must be running in order to operate this alternator.

  • Parallel hybrid drive:
Even in a parallel hybrid drive, the combustion engine and drive are linked by means of a mechanical connection. The alternator in this configuration level is coupled and connected such that it can be operated as both an alternator and a motor, in other words as both a power generator and a drive. An additional energy accumulator serves for storing and retrieving electrical energy. The capacity of this accumulator exceeds that of a normal on-board battery.
The electrical support can be activated as required — for example, in "boost mode". In the ideal scenario, it is possible to operate the vehicle either conventionally, purely electrically (e.g. in "silent mode") or in hybrid mode.

  • Diesel-Electric Drive:
The diesel-electric drive is characterized by its lack of mechanical connection between the combustion engine and the drive. The components are connected electrically in series. An alternator converts the mechanical energy delivered by the combustion engine into electrical energy. Both diesel-electric drives equipped with a drive motor and transmission as well as versions equipped with wheel hub motors are available.

  • Serial hybrid drive:
The serial hybrid drive supplements the diesel-electric drive (see above) with an energy storage device, so that the electrical energy can be temporarily stored in a battery, for instance. This set-up provides the option of running the combustion engine at a constant power output and requesting additional energy from the battery when required ("boost mode"). Conversely, when the vehicle is stationary, the combustion engine can continue to run at a power level and charge the battery.

  • Electric drive:
With the electric drive, there is no need for a combustion engine. All the energy required for the electric traction motor is made available by an energy storage device (battery) or fuel cell. This set-up makes it possible to operate the vehicle much more quietly with no local exhaust gas emissions, while also generating less heat. These properties make the electric drive an appealing option in the military sector and beyond. As the majority of purely mechanical elements of the power train are no longer required, the level of mechanical wear, maintenance complexity and installation space required are all reduced.

Energy system components:

  • Integrated starter generator (ISG):
A permanent-magnet-excited synchronous motor with no bearings. This component can be operated as either an alternator or a motor.

  • Alternator converter:
A bidirectional AC/DC converter to actively rectify the variable alternator voltage and keep the high-voltage bus stable at a constant voltage, as well as to provide starting functionality.

  • On-board system supply:
A bidirectional DC/DC converter as an interface between the high-voltage grid and the 28-V on-board system.

  • Grid-forming inverter:
A unidirectional DC/AC converter to generate a three-phase AC voltage grid capable of handling unbalanced loads.

  • High-voltage battery current regulator:
A bidirectional DC/DC converter to decouple the variable battery voltage from the stabilized high-voltage bus.

  • Hybrid control unit:
A device to link all high-voltage components with the vehicle's main engine and transmission to facilitate communication. The intelligent interaction between all components makes it possible to implement the full range of functions.

Power supply systems for PATRIOT air defense systems

Jenoptik Power supply systems for PATRIOT air defense systems

Mobile energy systems from Jenoptik are used to reliably supply air defense systems with power while simultaneously saving valuable fuel. The power supply systems cover the full energy requirements of command posts, launchers, fire control systems and radar systems. Our decades of experience in electrical machinery enables us to coordinate all system components with one another to optimum effect. The generator sets demonstrate exceptionally high power density and optimum efficiency while also being extremely compact in design.

We have developed a hybrid power supply system especially for the PATRIOT missile defense system. This power supply system combines a 5 kVA brushless, permanent-magnet-excited three-phase synchronous alternator with a water-cooled diesel engine. A supercapacitor is used to absorb load peaks. As such, the diesel engine does not need to be dimensioned to account for all possible loads. A temporary "silent mode" reduces noise levels when starting the engine.
