Groundbreaking ceremony for the new Jenoptik staff restaurant on Jena campus
The modern facility for catering, meetings and breaks will be open to Jenoptik employees as of mid-2022.
Today, together with representatives of the City of Jena and the planning bureau IGB, Weimar, the Jenoptik Executive Board held the symbolical groundbreaking ceremony for the new Jenoptik employee restaurant and thus marked the start of construction work. With an investment of approx. 11.9 million euros, a modern facility with catering, meeting and recreation zones will be built on the Jenoptik campus in the Jena-Göschwitz industrial park. Jenoptik employs about 1,400 people in Jena.
“For our Jena site, this is an important investment in an attractive working environment as well as in a sustainable location,” says Jenoptik President & CEO Stefan Traeger. Back in 2006, Jenoptik was one of the first employers in the city to invest in a kindergarten directly outside the factory gates so that Jenoptik employees were better able to reconcile family and work. In terms of sustainability of the new employee restaurant, Jenoptik is aiming for the Gold quality level according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), one of the most demanding international certifications for sustainable buildings.
The new staff restaurant will cover around 2,100 square meters on two floors and will provide lunch for around 800 employees every day, a café as well as modern meeting and lounge facilities. The outdoor area will also be redesigned. The new staff restaurant will be built on the same site as the old “JenCasino”, which was operated by Dussmann and demolished in summer 2020.
The building application for the new facility was already submitted in February 2021. Approval is expected in the coming weeks. The topping-out ceremony for the new building is scheduled for as early as November this year, with the opening planned for mid-2022.
"Thanks to our strong planning partner, we are confident that even in the current challenging construction environment, we will be able to adhere to the time and budget plans," said Julian Winkelhofer, Head of Jenoptik’s Corporate Real Estate Management, which is responsible for the construction. He referred to the special conditions resulting from increased raw material prices, material shortages and a high order situation among contractors.
